Breast ultrasound examination and needle aspirate sample
With an ultrasound examination it is possible to find out more about the nature of the change in the breast. Ultrasound is harmless and effortless for the patient.
If you find a lump in your breast, we recommend mammography and an ultrasound as the primary tests. If necessary, we also take a needle aspirate sample, and if the results show anything indicative of cancer, we start investigating the tumor staging and size with tests such as MRI scan.
Ultrasound imaging is based on loopback technology that applies sound waves. Ultrasound is used to supplement mammography and MRI scan.
A real-time ultrasound also helps us guide the needle when taking a needle aspirate sample. A needle aspirate sample, in other words a biopsy, is usually taken if previous test results have contained anything suspicious. Based on the tissue sample from the biopsy, the pathologist determines the type of breast cancer and the differentiation rate as well as other factors important for treatment, if necessary. The pathologist’s results take a few weekdays to arrive.
